2019 Familia Montaña Crianza, Rioja, Spain – 6+/$16.95

The Montaña family traces its heritage to the origins of the modern Rioja wine industry in the late 19th century. Román Montaña consolidated the family business in 1920 as the viticultural component of one of Rioja’s grand old marques, situated in medieval cellars underneath Haro, capital of Rioja Alta. The Montaña family retains portions of these impressive cellars to this day.  Román’s grandson Oscar Montaña currently directs a vineyard estate comprising over 270 acres of prime sites in the Rioja Alta and Alavesa districts. The Montaña vineyards boast a high average vine age, many vines dating to the immediate post phylloxera period and including significant acreage of the rare Graciano.

Using sustainable, biodynamic-organic farming practices, the grapes for this wine are sourced from the winery’s renown 40 year old Torcalvo estate vineyard which is situated at 580 meters on clay and limestone.  Hand harvested 97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano is destemmed and then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete tank with frequent pump overs.  Then racked into used French and American oak barrels and aged for 12 months.  Finally matured another 6 months in bottle.  14% alcohol.

“Comfort wine”!  A plush, medium bodied, deeply colored red with well integrated, soft supporting tannins.  Delicious, dark red plummy stone fruits and berries with spicy balsamic notes expand on the palate.  Hints of tanned leather, vanillin and fennel add to the surprising complexity.  Round and supple without any edginess.  So easy and affordable to drink.  Paella, slow smoked bbq meats, chorizo bean stew, New Orleans gumbo, even a pepperoni pizza….or simply by itself!  Should continue to drink well for the next 3-4 years.
