While visiting northern Tasmania in January 2020, Holm Oak was on our radar and we managed to book an appointment, and to hire a driver to take us out to the winery estate situated along the Tamar River in the Tamar Valley appellation about an hour drive from Launceston.
Holm Oak’s estate vineyards are steeped in sporting history. In the 1930s, Alexander Patent Racquet Co. selected the site for cultivation of Holm Oak trees, intended for use in the production of tennis racquets. Sadly, the oak proved substandard for the company’s rackets, but an ideal site later for the winery. Holm Oak is one of Tasmania’s earliest pioneers, as the vineyards were first planted in 1983. The Duffy’s bring years of professional trade experience to Holm Oak. Rebecca (Bec) has over 20 years as a winemaker, while her husband Tim comes from a multi-generation family of viticulturist.
This Pinot Gris is sourced from a 2 hectare vineyard planted in 2007. The fruit is harvested at optimal ripeness, when it displays a lovely crunchy pear characteristic with a little bright citrus. 20% of the wine completed its indigenous yeast fermentation in older used barrel of varying size after being, while 80% was fermented in cool temperature controlled stainless steel tank to preserve the fragrant aromatics. The wine was rested on the lees for 4 months prior to filtration and bottling.
Delicious now, but we understand this wine is even better with a little extra time to evolve before drinking. The cool clime assures higher acidity to keep the wine fresh and give it lift. The fresh pear-citrus aromas and flavor development have been enhanced, and now a flinty minerality, glorious tropical notes, and a creamy texture have added complexity and weight. The wine still finishes with a lovely crisp natural acidity.
