Description

One of my favorite traditional producers from the warmer southwestern corner of the Montalcino foothills has struck gold with its extraordinary 2019 Brunello di Montalcino.   I remember first discovering Lisini when I tasted its 1997 “Ugolaia” (considered better than its “Riserva”) at a trade tasting at Acquerello in San Francisco.  At the time, Ugolaia was still “affordable”  and unknown.  However, I did not hesitate purchasing the importer’s only 5 six packs allocated for California that day when it was offered in a pre-sale.  Later before the wine had arrived, quite a political stir was caused when all the “johnny come lately SF Somms” decided they simply must have some because the wine had scored an astronomical 96 point rating from the Wine Spectator, which was a relatively rare and unheard score in those days.

It is well documented the Lisini-Clementi family has owned land in the area of Montalcino since the 16th century.  Today the Lisini estate is considered an historic reference point for the traditional production of Brunello di Montalcino.

  • 100% Sangiovese from the estate’s massal selection planted in 1930s.
  • Vineyards range from 300-350 meters in elevation.
  • Vinification in glass-lined cement tanks with skin contact for 20-26 days.
  • Aged in 20-52 hectoliter casks for 42 months, followed by 6 to 8 months of bottle age prior to release
  • 3,000 cases are produced on average each year

“The Lisini 2019 Brunello is compelling, starting with its captivating aromas of fragrant blue flower, hay, perfumed berry, dark exotic spice, new leather and aromatic herb. It’s also delicious, delivering a great depth of flavors including juicy Morello cherry, raspberry croissant, licorice and crushed mint before a blood orange close. A backbone of velvety tannins provides seamless support while fresh acidity keep it vibrant and balanced. What a gorgeous wine and the best Brunello I’ve had so far from this historic estate. Drink 2028-2039” – 98 points, Kerin O’Keefe – Widely recognized authoritarian Italian wine critic!

“Leafy underbrush, earth and dusty mineral notes frame the core of cherry and raspberry flavors in this succulent red, which is supple, with a layer of chewy, chalky tannins coating the finish. Balanced overall, with a long, cherry-infused aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2043. 3,290 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.” – 97 points, Wine Spectator (June 30, 2024)
