2019 Masso Antico Primitivo del Salento, Puglia, Italy

The grapes used for Masso Antico Primitivo are grown using the vine head trained method known as “Alberello”, which has ancient origins and is typical of the southern Mediterranean area of Italy. Grown on its own root stock, this type of dry farming viticulture as was developed to compensate the lack of water and the very hot climate. The now very rare Alberello system, still widely used traditionally in southern Italy, and particularly in Sicily and Mount Etna, represents a very important part of the cultural and oenological heritage of Puglia. The rigorous hand-picking is followed by a meticulous selection of the destemmed grapes. The grape wither on plants, aided by the hot sun and the ocean wind.  A slow maturation in French oak barrels for about 6 months helps mature this outstanding full-bodied wine and to soften the tannins.  Full of dark, briary Zinfandel-like fruit, spice and a touch of vanilla notes carry into the finish.  14.0% Alcohol.  RS 16g/l

“99 Points! A dark ruby red in the glass. The wine reveals a very complex bouquet with intense and fine aromas ranging from ripe fruit to herbaceous notes. On the palate it has a velvety mouthfeel and a touch of fine vanilla notes. The tannins are soft and well-integrated. With a sustained finish, this first-class Primitivo makes a harmonious impression.” – Luca Maroni
