2019 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, Napa Valley – WA 95, JD 94

The Cabernet Sauvignon from the Outpost Estate Vineyard, located at 2,200 feet high on Howell mountain. Outpost grapes are harvested late in the season – by hand, at dawn – to preserve the full intensity and distinctive spicy character of the mountain fruit. The grapes are processed with as little manipulation as possible. Grapes from each block within the vineyard are fermented separately so that our winemaking team can be very selective about the lots that comprise the final blend. Wines are neither fined nor filtered allowing for the full expression of the vintages’ potential. The wine was aged in 80% in new French Oak barrels for 19 months.

“Outpost’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal, sourced from around the winery, plus some barrels from the True Vineyard that didn’t make the cut for inclusion there. Just don’t call it a second wine, as it’s a beautiful effort in its own right, with wonderfully pure cassis fruit, accented with notions of vanilla and hints of dried herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a long, dusty, tannic (but ripe) finish, try it in four or five years and drink it over the following two decades.” – 95 points, Wine Advocate

“Lots of blueberry and cassis fruit as well as graphite and bouquet garni emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. Medium to full-bodied and nicely balanced, with a supple, forward style for Howell Mountain Cabernet (which is a good thing), it has sweet tannins and a great finish. It’s going to be ideal for enjoying with just a few years of bottle age yet still evolve for 10-15 years.” – 94 points, Jeb Dunnuck

“Packs in a lot of plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors supported by a racy graphite underpinning, withshowy anise, fruitcake and Christmas pudding notes filling in for dramatic effect. Best from 2023 through 2034.” – 93 points, Wine Spectator
