Description

On a recent trip to Paso Robles, we had an enlightening tasting appointment at Law Estate Wines, a gorgeous modern winery, perched on a promontory mountain top overseeing its cascading limestone vineyards planted to mostly Rhone varieties.

All the 2020 wines were exceptionally well balanced blends of differently proportioned Grenache and  Syrah.  However, the wine that won us over had a significant component of Cabernet Sauvignon.  Typically in other vintages,  “Audacious” also includes Carignan which would complete a modern day Priorat profile.  Note, the similarity ends here as these calcareous soils have zero resemblance to the Illicorella schist found in that region of Spain.  Not shy with alcohol but never evident, the beautiful blending by winemaker Philipp Pfunder produces a nearly seamless wine with substantial and appealing richness while still light on its feet.

“The 2020 Audacious is a blend of 41% Grenache, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah matured for 22 months in 55% new French oak barrels and puncheons. It has a medium ruby color and lush aromas of blueberry, red and black cherries, cigar box, cinnamon stick and wafts of powdered sugar. The full-bodied palate offers energetic acidity, superfine chalky tannins, concentrated, spicy fruits and a long, layered finish.” – 96 points, Wine Advocate (Dec 2022)
