Paying homage to Alsace, France – The Union Sacré wines are made by two friends from different continents. Union Sacré exists at the meeting of worlds. Made by two long time friends, Xavier and Philip, who arrived at the Central Coast from opposite ends of the Earth. Xavier Arnaudin is a WSET certified, oenology degree holder from France, while Philip Muzzy is a self-taught designer from Michigan who kind of misses living in a van.
Between the two of them, Xavier and Philip have 25+ years experience working in Central Coast wineries. Xavier has been cellar master or assistant winemaker for some of the Central Coasts most luminous wineries including Herman Story and Sans Liege. Philip cut his teeth at Proof Wine Collective.
The boys sourced this 100% Gewurztraminer from the Los Ositos Vineyard in Arroyo Seco. The grapes were completely de-stemmed and allowed to soak for 20 hours in the juice for extended skin contact which imparted the pink hue and extracted flavor. The wine was then cool fermented in temperature stainless steel tanks for 4 weeks. The wine was then racked from the primary lees and continued to age in 900 liter neutral wood tank for another 4 months.
We found this DRY, extra skin contact version of lightly colored rosé-like (“orange wine”) Gewurztraminer to be as intriguing as it is delicious to drink. And the price tag is the add bonus! Rose petals, lychee, with hints of peach and pineapple. Brisk, cleansing acidity. A slightly grainy, tea-like tannin adds complexity, and will allow you to pair with more assertive dishes if need be. No “OJ” funk and promises to surprise you as it did us! A pure delight to drink, just like the debut 2019 vintage. Highly recommend with grilled sausage and kraut, or firm textured fin fish or Asian styled scampi..
