Description

Founded in 2015, the 106-acre Bodegas Morca estate is planted with organic and dry farmed, head-pruned bush vines of old-vine Garnacha, ranging in age from 45 to 87 years old at altitudes between 1,800 to 2,800 feet at the foot of the Moncayo Mountain on limestone soils.  Known as the “Empire of Garnacha”, all of the vineyards are dry-farmed, without the use of pesticides or herbicides. The winery, which was built to LEED (“Leadership in Energy Efficient Design”) Standards, is off the electrical grid using only solar power, and is zero-waste. Thus, each parcel is hand-harvested, fermented and aged separately so that their evolutions can be monitored strictly through multiple tastings and ultimately the perfect blends can be made for each of the wines produced at this winery.

Bodegas Morca is a Juan Gil family (Jumilla) project with local viticulturist Jordi Flos and winemaker Frank Gonzales in charge.  Gonzalez began his career with the Gil Family assisting Chris Ringland at Bodegas El Nido.

This Garnacha is handpicked and sorted from low yield estate vines 45-50 years old, planted at 1,970 feet.  The fermentation is with indigenous yeast in open stainless-steel vats with followed by malolactic and 15 months aging in French oak barrels.

This intensely colored ruby/purple Garnacha offers finesse and balance despite its ripeness and 16% alcohol.  Concentrated aromas of spicy black cherry and plum jam-preserves are “spiked” with eau de vie, cigar box, anise, and subtle oak spice nuances.  Full-bodied, but never heavy, and more restrained when compared to other wines from this very warm region, which is most likely influenced by limestone’s ability to retain moisture.  Great value!
