2021 Giant Steps Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia – WS94

In 1997 Phil Sexton arrived in the Yarra Valley in search of altitude, aged soils, slopes of exposure, regular rainfall and cool to cold night-time temperatures and a gentle breeze off the protecting mountain ranges. Why, because he wanted to grow amazing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit to make wines of purity and finesse.

Steve Flamsteed, aka “Flamo”, Chief Winemaker of Giant Steps since 2003 has set about creating a range of single vineyard wines that personify each site.  However, some of Flamo’s finest and more affordable efforts have been his cuvee blends from his palette of various estate vineyard sites and parcels throughout the cool clime Yarra Valley.

Like this Giant Steps Pinot Noir ’21 which just received 94 points from Wine Spectator, the wines continue to receive global acclaim and established a strong reputation in restaurants and fine wine stores around the world.

Vineyards: Sexton, Applejack, Primavera, Swallowfield, Wombat Creek and Tarraford Vineyards
Varietals: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol; 13.5
TA (g/L): 6.00
pH: 3.52
Cellaring: Now – 6 years

Growing Season:  2021 began as a challenging vintage in the Yarra Valley due to summer and autumn rains and cooler than average temperatures during the growing season. However, this then led to a long slow ripening period which produced thicker skins, riper stems and more concentrated flavors, resulting in Pinot Noir of excellent quality.

Vinification:  100% hand-picked, all fruit is chilled overnight to 12 degrees, cold soaked for 3 days, then allowed to warm in small open fermenters in order to kick start wild fermentation.
Parcels were divided into either 100% “destemmed” or “whole bunch”; fermented, pressed, and matured in French oak (10% new, 90% older) for 8 months.  Blended in October and then bottled by gravity without fining or filtration in November.

“Stunning, with terrific focus and intensity to the core of Earl Grey tea, firm, juicy, cherry, raspberry and white pepper flavors.  Notes of clove and green cardamon linger on the finish, with a touch of salted caramel.  Drink now through 2034.  8,000 cases.  1,000 imported.  – 94 points, Wine Spectator (MW)
