Long known for its organic and biodynamic farming practices, all the elements of the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc converge at Fig Tree Vineyard. The site is located at the confluence of two waterways, Wine Creek and Dry Creek in the winery’s estate 110 acre Wine Creek Ranch Vineyard (59 acres planted to Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhone varietal vines). The wine’s mineral freshness comes from the alluvial, rocky soils that have been scoured over millennia. The rare Musqué clone adds complexity and aromatic lift.
Winemaker Hugh Chappelle is a long time friend and who practices only when necessary, minimal intervention winemaking to showcase the true expression of fruit and place. He was the grill meister at my 50 birthday party. Visit the Dry Creek winery for tasting and tour Quivira’s marvelous organic farm and garden.
Star bright in the glass with the color of pale straw, the wine exudes fruit aromas of Meyer lemon, key lime, apricot and fig leaf. These are complemented by non fruit notes of white flowers, jalapeno, gravel and freshly watered grass. In the mouth the Fig Tree explodes with tart lemon, lime and tangerine. High acidity is tempered with river rock minerality, white flowers and orange pith which changes to a fleshy, ripe tangerine on the finish.
“Vibrant and expressive, with honeysuckle, litsea oil and lemon verbena notes up front, plus a core of citrus and pineapple as well as a hint of beeswax on a supple frame. Delivers generous spicy details that linger on the long, expressive finish. Drink now. 1,465 cases made.” – 93 points, Wine Spectator
