2022 Cadre Sauvignon Blanc Stone Blossom Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo



The Edna Valley is the single coolest AVA in all of California as proven by a Southern Oregon University ten-year climatic study of every region in California.  However, just about all Sauvignon Blanc in California is grown in a warm climate.  Thus cool climate Sauvignon Blanc is rare in here, yet it’s the norm for the greatest Sauvignon Blanc in the world (think Sancerre and Marlborough). Cadre sits at the forefront of leading the cool climate Sauvignon Blanc as its vineyards are situated just five miles from the Pacific Ocean.  All farming is SIP Certified Sustainable.

The Stone Blossom is a blend of old vine Clone 1 and ENTAV Clone 530 (a Loire Valley clone). A strong component of the blend comes from a single western block of the original Paragon Vineyard planted in 1973.  These vines were originally own rooted Gamay Noir that were grafted over to Sauvignon Blanc in the early 1980’s. The soils are made up of well drained Diablo clay soils with flecks of limestone and an underlying layer of residual material weathered from sandstone, shale, and mudstone (harvested October 3rd. 2022)

The Clone 530 portion comes from plantings on the far eastern side of the property based on more iron and volcanic soils. Clone 530 is an earlier ripener, with much lower in pyrazines and brings a unique dimension to the wine (harvested September 12th, 2022)

Thie 2022 is 95% Sauvignon Blanc with a smidgeon 5% Gruner Veltliner.  The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tank and aged on its lees.  There is no malolactic implemented.  Alcohol is 14.2%.

The wine demonstrates a great mix of flinty citrus and spicy herbaceous aromatics. Ripe passionfruit compliments hints of fennel and coriander. In the background, minerality is present as well as hints of green apple, cucumber and exotic spice.  On the palate imagine lime “pop rocks” exploding with freshness and energy.  But there is also beautiful texture and complex flavors of citrus, kiwi, melon and summer yellow orchard fruit, all brightened by saline acidity.
