Description

We learned of this Archanes winery from our driver Katerina when we visited the Greek island of Crete in late September of 2023.

Μoinoterra: Means the land of Minos (King of ancient Knossos and Minoan civilization, which contains the oino(wine).

South of Archanes at a distance of 4 kilometers and at an altitude of 555 meters, the archaeologist Spyros Marinatos excavated in 1949 a Minoan farmhouse-mansion from the 16th century BC. This excavation documents the production of wine and olive oil by the Minoan culture in the Archanon area over the last 3,700 years.

The Muscat family is one of the oldest varieties, while it is cultivated in almost all the wine regions of the world, this Muscat takes its name from the mountain village of Spina, in the province of Selino, Chania, and is one of the most aromatic varieties of the Cretan vineyard. Its grapes are small, with small ridges and a thin golden-yellow skin, quite sensitive and therefore need special care from the viticulturist. Spina’s Muscat gives dry but also sweet wines, with intense aromas, dominated by flower blossoms, hyacinth, jasmine, gardenia, citrus fruits, peach, apricot and herbs such as chamomile.

From two unique loamy, high elevation and sloped, dry farmed plots in the Archanes zone.  Cold soaked and gently pressed.  Only free-run juice is fermented in cool temperature controlled stainless steel tank.

Fresh, vibrant, dry!  Floral and spice, under ripe melon rind and citrus.  Pure delight!
