Description

In 1967, Livio Sassetti was among the founders of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, which was the same year the DOCG system was written into law. In the late 1970s, Livio purchased Podere Pertimali, the 16-hectare (40-acre) vineyard in the fabled Montosoli area now renowned for the production of benchmark Brunello. The family further expanded its vineyard holdings in 1999 with estate vineyards in La Querciolina along the Tuscan coast. Today, Lorenzo Sassetti is the winemaker and proprietor, along with his wife Sabina La Brusco Sassetti.

The Montosoli hill is located in the northern side of the Montalcino appellation, a cool, well-ventilated area.   Sassetti’s Brunello is known for freshness and it’s classical style that so clearly reflects the terroir of this special area of Montalcino.  The unique soils are rich in marine fossils and shells.  The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, and all fruit is harvested by hand.

95 points Wine Spectator! Ripe, sweet cherry and strawberry flavors are offset with savory elements of mushroom, woodsy underbrush and leather. This intense red is well integrated and supple in texture, with a terrific, succulent aftertaste. Drink now through 2040.

95 points James Suckling! Expressie, crunchy dark fruit, such as black cherry and blue plum, as well as violets and peppery undertones. Medium-bodied, creamy palate with a wonderful backbone of acidity. Subtly toasty finish. Complex, yet well rounded and balanced. Better after 2027.

95 points Vinous! The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is a spice box of a wine, opening with a burst of camphor and dried flowers, giving way to crushed blackberries, sage and cloves. This is surprisingly energetic and racy in style. Vibrant acidity propels depths of dark red fruits and inner floral as salty minerals saturate. The 2019 finishes structured and long yet still lively, leaving violet inner florals and hints of currant to taper off slowly. The combination of power, depth and energy makes this impossible to ignore.
