Description

A box of samples from one of our best Spanish importers just revealed another fabulous red value.  The 100% Tempranillo (Tinta del Pais) Rubiejo was absolutely “milk and cookies” with Renee’s smoked rack of lamb.   Don’t for a moment be discouraged by Wine Spectator’s “only 92 points rating”…. If you like a darkly colored, full-bodied, polished but brooding red just oozing with blackberry fruit and complexity, then this is your tea!

Produced by the Calvo family using only estate fruit and traditional methods passed down through generations, this wine is

characterized by its power and structure.

  • Aroma: Complex and potent.  Dark cherry and blackberry seamlessly blended with toasted wood nuances like vanilla and sweet spices.
  • Palate: Powerful yet refined, the mid-palate is fleshy and “glyceric” (smooth texture) with well-balanced acidity.
  • Finish: Long and persistent, often showing hints of balsamic and a distinct mineral complexity typical of high-altitude Ribera del Duero terroir.
  • Grapes: 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo) sourced from estate vineyards.
  • Aging: Aged for 14 to 16 months in oak barrels (70% French, 30% American).
  • Alcohol: 14% ABV.

“A stylish red, with balsamico-infused acidity and fine, chalky tannins structuring an enticing range of ripe black currant, fig cake, licorice and smoke notes. There’s a toasty edge, providing subtle complexity while allowing the focused core of fruit flavors to shine. Drink now through 2037. 200 cases made, 50 cases imported.” – 92 points, Wine Spectator
