Description
We are very fond of so many Sauvignon Blanc produced from the different regions of the world. But there is something so special and distinctive about the Sauvignon Blanc produced in the high elevation, cool clime, well drained granite and limestone vineyards of Alto Adige in the far reaches of northern Italy (once upon a time Austria). Many of you are familiar with the brilliant white wines produced by Terlano, but it’s been since the 2009 vintage that we have been able to get our hands on any of the Sauvignon Blanc produced from the legendary and 12-hectare estate of Ignaz Niedrist! This is a “must purchase” opportunity, arriving this Friday and not to be missed!
The 2024 Ignaz Niedrist Sauvignon ‘Porphyr & Kalk’ is a highly acclaimed, expressively mineral white wine from the Alto Adige DOC in Northern Italy. Crafted by superstar producer Weingut Niedrist, this specific vintage recently received a stellar 96-point rating from VinePair, celebrated for its impeccable balance and distinct high-elevation character. No other ratings have been recorded at this time.
The name “Porphyr & Kalk” translates directly to Granite & Limestone, which are the dominant soil types of the alpine vineyards where the 25+ year old Sauvignon Blanc vines are grown on east facing slopes about 2,000 feet above sea level. This combination of volcanic porphyr and limestone gravel and high elevation gives the wine an intense structural backbone, complex tension, fresh vibrant acidity and a signature “salty” mineral drive. All of the viticulture is strictly organic farming across all 12 hectares of the estate. The Niedrists keep their crop yields nearly one-third lower than what regional Alto Adige DOC regulations allow.
The hand harvested 100% Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tank for two weeks. A small amount is racked to neutral oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation is avoided to preserve its razor-sharp freshness before aging on its fine lees for six months. The wine is unfined, but lightly filtered before bottling to remove any remaining yeast that might begin another fermentation.
Pale golden yellow with subtle, bright amber nuances. An elegant and text-book varietal profile featuring citrus blossom, gooseberry, fresh-cut grass, and fine alpine herbs with a distinct flinty-salty edge. Crisp and structured with ripe lemon curd fruit and a hint of juicy peach. The vibrant, high-altitude acidity perfectly balances a fine, creamy texture derived from extended fine lees aging. Persistent, clean, and long, concluding with a distinctly saline-mineral edge. Long term aging is possible if given a chance!
“It has bright aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit pith, and a quiet, salty butter note. The palate has impeccable balance with soft, creamy fruit and supportive acidity. The finish lingers in the best way.” 96 points – VinePair
