The Yarra Valley is Australia’s first and oldest wine region in the state of Victoria about 35 miles east of Melbourne.   Back in January 2020 we bribed an Uber driver to drive us there “off the clock” to visit the region’s preeminent winery Giant Steps.  Curiously, only recently did we discover the winery is named in tribute to the legendary jazz musician John Coltrane’s iconic album “Giant Steps”!!   Even more attention getting has been the revelation found in two remarkable new debut wines designated “Circle of Fifths” which is a visual map used in music theory to show the relationship between the 12 musical keys, their key signatures, and their corresponding harmonic chords.  For the winery, this is a model for blending its premiere Pinot Noir and Chardonnay estate vineyard sites to compose one wine.  All I can say is this new approach has been extremely successful!   We are fortunate enough to have secured the last few cases of the very highly rated 2024 Giant Steps “Circle of Fifths” Pinot Noir and Chardonnay!
